Frames are handcrafted by an artisan-woodworker and custom-designed specifically for Jonathan’s work. The outer wooden frame "floats" with a 1/4” gap around the print and mounts flush to the wall using a French cleat system. See our Printing/Framing page for more information.

Black and white photo of a series of wooden posts leading into calm water, creating a sense of depth and tranquility.

Lake Pontchartrain, New Orleans, Louisiana

I found these stumps at low tide, scattered just below the surface where the water usually hides them. They were worn down to almost nothing—just short, jagged forms barely breaking the surface. What caught my attention was how they seemed to float in the fog, almost weightless, yet still firmly anchored in place. The water was completely still, and the air held that heavy, quiet quality that only comes right before the day begins.

Wooden Stumps is part of my broader Human/Nature project, which explores the subtle interplay between the industrial and the natural world—how human-made objects become entwined with the environment over time, often fading quietly into it. I chose to photograph these industrial remnants submerged in water because they embody this intersection perfectly. They are fragments of human industry, softened and transformed by nature’s slow, patient forces.

This image reflects on what remains after human purpose has dissolved—the small, almost-overlooked shapes that persist quietly, a soft tension between presence and erasure, stillness and the passage of time. It invites viewers to consider the transient yet enduring imprint we leave on the world, and how nature reclaims and redefines these traces in unexpected, hauntingly beautiful ways.
