Black and white waterfall cascading over a cliff, surrounded by rocky formations.

Snoqualmie Falls, Fall City, Washington

This series investigates how familiar landscapes are experienced through feelings and memories instead of exact visuals. Through sparse black-and-white images, I provide a fresh viewpoint that invites viewers to carefully observe and imagine what’s absent—reflecting how the scenes slowly unfolded for me in the darkness.

I arrived at Snoqualmie Falls on a misty evening, just after a heavy rain. The river was surging with volume, and I positioned myself at a hidden, less-traveled vantage deep in the canyon to capture the full 270-foot plunge as it disappeared into a churning fog below. The surrounding evergreens seemed to lean inward, framing the falls like cathedral columns. I timed the exposure to preserve both the waterfall’s motion and its monumental presence.

Waterfalls

Denver-based artist Jonathan Knight captures waterfalls across California, Oregon, Washington, and Colorado in a moody, minimalist style. Photographed shortly after sunset, his black-and-white images emphasize the shape of the water against darkened landscapes, using low contrast to highlight the natural beauty of each cascade. Knight describes the project as focusing on "the figure of the waterfall against negative space," turning the flowing water into the central subject. His nighttime hikes often involved solitary treks through forests, illuminated only by a headlamp, where he occasionally encountered wildlife like elk or deer. Prints from the series are available on his website, and the full collection can be viewed online.
