Black and white photograph of a waterfall cascading down a cliff surrounded by trees and rocks.

Nevada Falls, Yosemite National Park, California

This series explores how we relate to landscapes through emotions and memories rather than exact visual details. The pared-down black-and-white images invite viewers to actively interpret and gradually assemble the scene, similar to how I experienced it while shooting in low light.

Nevada Falls epitomizes the raw grandeur of Yosemite, where water and granite have carved a timeless legacy. I hiked the Mist Trail with 40 pounds of gear during peak spring runoff, stopping just above Vernal Falls to catch this commanding view. The deafening roar of the waterfall filled the air as the sky opened momentarily, casting a fleeting light across the scene. The full force of the 594-foot drop came into focus—water crashing over centuries-old granite, sending mist into the air. The sheer magnitude of the falls and the surrounding cliffs felt like an ancient monument to nature’s unyielding power, standing resolute and timeless in the face of constant change. This photograph captures not only the fall’s elemental force but also the awe it inspires—an unforgettable testament to the raw beauty and scale of Yosemite’s wilderness.

Waterfalls

Denver-based artist Jonathan Knight captures waterfalls across California, Oregon, Washington, and Colorado in a moody, minimalist style. Photographed shortly after sunset, his black-and-white images emphasize the shape of the water against darkened landscapes, using low contrast to highlight the natural beauty of each cascade. Knight describes the project as focusing on "the figure of the waterfall against negative space," turning the flowing water into the central subject. His nighttime hikes often involved solitary treks through forests, illuminated only by a headlamp, where he occasionally encountered wildlife like elk or deer. Prints from the series are available on his website, and the full collection can be viewed online.
