Black and white photo of a tall waterfall cascading down a cliffside in a forested area.

South Falls, Trail of Ten Falls, Oregon

This series explores how landscapes are experienced through feelings and memories instead of direct visual details. The simple black-and-white photos invite careful observation and imagination to complete the scene, mirroring how I gradually discovered each moment in low light.

In the heart of Oregon’s Silver Falls State Park, I captured this image of South Falls just after dusk, when the canyon was hushed in mist and the last birdsong echoed through the trees. From beneath the basalt amphitheater, I framed the shot to showcase the waterfall’s elegant arc as it launches cleanly from the cliff—forming a luminous curtain of water that visitors can walk behind. The soft, diffused light unique to the Pacific Northwest transformed the scene into something ancient and otherworldly, where every drop seemed to echo through time. Standing alone in the twilight, I felt as if I had stumbled upon a sacred exchange between stone and stream—an ephemeral beauty reserved for those who linger just a little longer. This photograph captures not just a waterfall, but the quiet reverence of the forest itself.

Waterfalls

Denver-based artist Jonathan Knight captures waterfalls across California, Oregon, Washington, and Colorado in a moody, minimalist style. Photographed shortly after sunset, his black-and-white images emphasize the shape of the water against darkened landscapes, using low contrast to highlight the natural beauty of each cascade. Knight describes the project as focusing on "the figure of the waterfall against negative space," turning the flowing water into the central subject. His nighttime hikes often involved solitary treks through forests, illuminated only by a headlamp, where he occasionally encountered wildlife like elk or deer. Prints from the series are available on his website, and the full collection can be viewed online.
